How to Request a Dyslexia Evaluation from Your School (Step by Step)

Under IDEA, your child has the right to a free evaluation. Here's exactly how to request one, what to expect, and how to follow up if the school says no.

Every child in the United States has the right to a free, comprehensive evaluation for learning disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Here's exactly how to exercise that right.

Step 1: Put It in Writing

A verbal request carries much less weight than a written one. Write a letter (or use our Letter Generator) addressed to your school's principal and special education director. State clearly that you are requesting a special education evaluation under IDEA.

Step 2: Send It the Right Way

Email the letter AND send a physical copy via certified mail with return receipt. This creates a legal paper trail with timestamps. Keep a copy for yourself.

Step 3: Know the Timeline

Once the school receives your written request, they have 10 business days to respond with either an evaluation plan (which you must consent to in writing) or a written explanation of why they're declining. If they decline, they must tell you your rights to dispute that decision.

Step 4: Review the Evaluation Plan

The evaluation plan outlines what assessments they'll conduct. Make sure it includes tests for phonological awareness, reading fluency, and language processing — not just an IQ test or classroom observation.

Step 5: Attend the Results Meeting

You have the right to bring a support person — an advocate, another parent, or anyone you trust. Ask for a copy of all reports before the meeting so you have time to review them.

If the School Says No

You can file a complaint with your state's department of education, request mediation, or pursue a due process hearing. You can also get an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at the school's expense in certain circumstances. Our AI Navigator can walk you through your specific situation.
